Very good post! We make it a point to buy all of our eggs either from friends who keep hens or from small farms where the hens are allowed ample room to live.
I *loved* the ridiculous apology the farm gave yesterday “we were acting like a small farm”. Is that supposed to make us sympathize? That’s like walmart saying it thought it was a neighborhood five-and-dime.
Mr. DeCoster was fined $2 mil by the State of Maine for flagrant violations of animal husbandry laws in his houses in Turner, ME. He also had violations of immigration and labor laws. All in all, it was a nasty place and recently it was sited for animal cruelty violations. Although supposedly under a different owner, Jack maintains some financial interest in those houses.
Yes Ali, it is still a nasty place as are all those factory egg farms. As I said they were recently fined for animal cruelty based on some undercover filming. The other issue surrounding Mr. DeCoster’s operations is the proximity of hog barns to chicken barns. There is fear of the possibility of a super bug developing from cross contamination from these places. Not sure of the science here but I wouldn’t be surprised.

So glad we have our own hens.

His specious arguments make me crazy. DeCoster hasn’t been a small farm in 50 years. I am embarrassed that Maine is home to it.

From what I hear, it is still a nasty place, for the hens and for the workers.

All I can say is Jack Decoster is a very “FOWL” man!
