Weird things you find in your garden

June 7, 2010

Yep, that’s a clam.  Or perhaps a mussel, I dimly recall that freshwater mussels resemble clams.  While Henbogle is in Midcoast Maine, we are quite a distance from the shore, so I suspect this is a freshwater clam or mussel.  But I am by no means an expert on clam identification.  Eating, however, is another matter.

And yes, this clam is alive, sort of.  See the innards?  That’s the foot, the light colored area on the left, and the neck, the dark circular area in the center.  I think.  Most of what I can recall of clam anatomy comes from eating steamers, dipped in butter.  Yum.

How did it get to Henbogle?  I suspect a seagull dropped it.  Perhaps it is from nearby Merrymeeting Bay.  Huh.

Leeky, lettucey love

June 7, 2010

Blah blah blah kale, lettuce and leeks.  Sigh.  I LOVE the delicious lettuce, but this must be getting boring for the rest of you!  This week’s total, 9 glorious heads of lettuce, 25 oz. of kale, and 20 oz. of leeks overwintered from last year, with a tiny handful of flea beetle-chewed arugula and a few radishes.  I’m missing the scallions, I wish we had not needed to pull them in our quackgrass eradication project.

Harvest value update:  Expenses: $267.54  Crop value: $217.66  Garden value: $-49.89.  Getting closer to pay off!

This post is part of the delicious Harvest Monday series at Daphne’s Dandelions, where gardeners are invited, no, encouraged to boast about their harvests.
